Research & Career-Building
Have a look at the institutes & initiatives run by major league universities. For example, NYU’s Center for Data Science (CDS) is a hub of groundbreaking research, and it often hosts events & seminars. Over at Cornell, you’ll discover the Center for Data Science for Enterprise & Society, with its lecture series & interdisciplinary projects. But you can also investigate Columbia’s Data Science Institute (DSI), UR’s Center of Excellence in Data Science, Pace University’s Location Analytics and GIS Lab, or Syracuse’s Center for Computational and Data Science (CCDS) and Big Data and Data Analytics cluster.
The trick is matching the strengths of the department or school to your interests. For example, aspiring business analytics students in New York can ask if the School of Business is a) AACSB-accredited; and b) actively working on data-focused projects with current industry partners. For a great example of this, see NYU Stern’s section on Business Partnerships.
It goes without saying that New York City is an incredible place for analytics professionals to network. The Big Apple often hosts the most important analytics conferences in the country (e.g. ICDM), as well as smaller meetups & groups (e.g. NYC Women in Machine Learning & Data Science). In addition to attending events run by New York universities (see above), you may wish to bookmark ODSC NYC, MLconf– New York City, and Data Science Salon New York.
